LEED © or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design is the green building certification program most used worldwide. LEED © recognizes building strategies and practices to construct sustainable buildings, either newly constructed, refurbished or in used.
LEED certified buildings as compared to other constructions, have lower operating costs, lower energy consumption and water up to 40%. Besides enjoying prestige and being recognized globally, LEED buildings obtain a greater market value when operative and a much higher environmental quality of the spaces intervened, improving both productivity and satisfaction of the users.
This set of "rules" are aimed at achieving sustainability of those buildings designed as LEED and incorporate measures falling into the following sections:
- Design innovation (sustainable building)
- Indoor environmental quality (consumption monitoring facility use, air quality, lighting control, thermal control)
- Materials and resources (local, quality certificates, renewable ...)
- Energy and atmosphere (search for energy efficiency, reduced environmental impact, use of renewable energies)
- Efficient use of water (water resources management, reuse and reduction of use)
- Land / sustainable areas (project integration into existing infrastructure, protection and preservation of natural areas or blank spaces, prevention of environmental pollution and pollution abatement)
- Location and transport (pollution reduction and mitigation of pollutants impacts automobile)
